There’s nothing like having plenty of room to sprawl out in your roof top tent when you’re on a camping trip. It is even more important to have enough room for the whole family too!
That’s why I made a list of massive roof top tents (RTTs) that can accommodate the largest of party sizes. I will also talk about some of the features and details of each tent such as dimensions, mattress sizes, and more! This should help shed some light on the pros and cons of these RTTs too.
One common complaint about RTTs is that they have a lack of sleeping space, but I would argue that there are plenty of options out there, you just have to know where to find them.
Tuff Stuff Elite Overland
Price | Dimensions Open | Mattress Size | Weight |
$2,096 | 96″ L x 79″ W x 52″ H | 77″ x 96″ | 233 lbs |
The Tuffstuff Elite RTT is one of the largest in the market. This company has made a name for themselves by selling a quality product for a very fair price. Not only is this RTT big as it is, but it also has a massive annex you can buy separately too!
Since the tent can fit two adults and three children, or four adults, it is the perfect family RTT! The annex room is 113″ x 90″, which can fit a blowup mattress and sleep another four campers as well.
If you’re looking for the best RTTs specifically for families, I wrote a separate article detailing my picks for that topic. It is tailored more towards the features that mean more to families, whereas this article is more concerned with the overall footprint of the tents. The Elite Overland also has a nice feature where the two mattresses can be divided by a layer of tent fabric, which splits the tent into two “rooms”. Each having their own 2.75-inch thick mattress, entrance, and ladder!
Some other specs I like in this RTT is the 280-gram ripstop fabric, its 4-season rating, insulated aluminum base, and 6 windows for great views and ventilation. The one thing I would change about this tent is the sliding ladders. They can be a pain to use and the tracks will stick as they get filled with dirt and dust, this is why telescoping ladders are far superior!
In all, this RTT provides a ton of space for large parties as well as great features for a reasonable price point. Tuffstuff makes really good products and by going with this model you could save yourself a decent chunk of change without forgoing many features that may be in a more expensive RTT brand.
iKamper Skycamp 3.0
Price | Dimensions Open | Mattress Size | Weight |
$3,899 | 82.6″ x 85.8 x 43.3” | 82.6″ x 74.8″ | 160 lbs |
This is one of the largest hardshell RTTs when it is set up. It is able to accommodate 3 adults, or two children and two adults, due to its unique fold-out design.
iKamper is a beloved RTT brand because they make premium products that look as good as they perform. All of the biggest RTTs will be softshells, but I thought it would be worth including a hardshell too! This is a rare hardshell that also has an optional annex for $600 but it is massive and doubles as awning using the doors.
This tent is awesome because you can open it up and be ready to camp in just 60 seconds. The inside of the tent is fitted with a super comfortable king-sized 1.8″ high-density foam mattress. The fabric is extremely durable since it is made out of insulating poly-cotton canvas too.
The shell of the tent is made of double-layered fiberglass with an inch of air insulation between the two layers for optimal insulation in cold climates. The base of the tent also implements a durable aluminum honeycomb design, which also has great insulation capabilities.
This tent uses premium lightweight materials and the quality is second to none. It is aerodynamic while driving and has iKamper’s mounting system 2.0 which will dramatically speed up the mounting process. If this model is in your price range, I can say with confidence that you will love this model, as many RTT users do!
FSR High Country 80″
Price | Dimensions Open | Mattress Size | Weight |
$2,895 | 98″L X 80″W X 49″H | 98″ L x 80″ W | 169 lbs |
Freespirit Recreation has its massive High Country 80″ model which sleeps 4-5 people, depending on if you’re trying to sleep all adults, or two adults and three kids. This foldout model is different in many ways compared to other RTTs, even at first glance.
The mattress is about the size of a king’s dimensions and made with a 2″ thick high-density foam mattress. The tent uses a telescoping ladder and offers 360-degree views with its window system.
The fabric is a standard 600D poly-Oxford fabric and comes with a waterproof rainfly as well. What I really like about this tent is it’s low-profile when shut and how lightweight it is for its size! Many of the larger foldable tents cross that 200-pound threshold, but this RTT is far below that.
I have actually seen and been in this model at a recent camping expo and I was very impressed with its features and solid frame. Anytime you pay a premium for a product, you are ensuring great quality. For me, the selling point is its lightweight and strong construction.
Eezi-Awn Series 3 (Size 2200)
Price | Dimensions Open | Mattress Size | Weight |
$3,375 | 96″ L x 87″ W x 51″ H | 96″ L x 87″ W | 215 lbs |
Eezi-Awn is one of the biggest RTT manufacturers in the world and makes its tents in South Africa. This tent comes in five sizes and we will be covering the 2200 model which has two twin sized mattresses in it.
This RTT comes with two ladders and can divide into separate rooms. Since it was developed in the harsh African environments, this tent comes with a super durable 360g ripstop fabric that can be used in any season.
There is also a decently sized annex option that can accommodate more sleeping space if you need it! The mattress is a plush 2.5″ thick and made of high-density foam.
With this RTT and brand, you pay a bit extra for quality and durability. This manufacturer has been around for many years and the Series 3 model is one of the most popular in their entire line-up since it has five different sizes to choose from.
If a long lasting tent and the ability to camp at any time of the year are just as important to you as the size, this is a great choice to go with.
CVT Mount Denali
Price | Dimensions Open | Mattress Size | Weight |
$2,695 | 96″ L x 87″ W x 50″ H | 96″ L x 87″ W | 172 |
I love CVT as a brand and they have a fantastic reputation for making quality RTTs. The Mount Denali is the largest in their fleet of tents and it packs a punch!
This tent is very comparable to the Eezi-Awn model in terms of size, base features, the two ladders, and dividable rooms. However, this model has many more upgradable options and it comes with a large annex included. You can slow upgraded for a couple of hundred bucks to their extended model which will give an overhang to the entrance.
You can upgrade to the “Summit Edition” which costs $3,295 and weighs 247 pounds. Bear with me, this includes a crap ton of upgrades! The summit comes with a 360g fabric, heavier rainfall, insulated floor, telescoping ladder, softer mattress, an anti-condensation mat, and more if you can believe that!
That was a mouthful, but this tent is ideal for extreme weather camping and ultimate comfort. Be aware, the fully decked out extended Summit edition costs $3,495 and weighs 260 pounds! If your vehicle can handle the weight, this is a dream RTT for many people.
You can also find a happy medium between the two with the hybrid edition which is still a solid tent to take winter camping!
CVT is known for the long lasting ability of their tents and have a close knit following of users. I would highly recommend this RTT and when meeting them at a local expo, not only did I like the tents, but they were great too! I haven’t heard anyone seriously complain over their CVT tent
Adding an annex
As you can tell, RTTs can’t really exceed the 4-5 person threshold. However, adding an annex can fit another 3,4, or even 5 campers connected right to your tent.
If you have kids, you will still be plenty close to them and it’s like they’re camping in regular ground tent. Plus, an RTT that has an extended canopy over the entrance, like the TuffStuff Elite, you can keep the door open and still talk to and see them if you want.
If you’re thinking this might be a good option for you, I made an article showing my favorite RTTs that come with awesome annexes included. As always, it will is helpful and unbiased! Click here to be directed to my RTT annex article!
Summary
In total there are about 5 RTTs that compete for being the largest in the market. But at the end of the day you won’t be able to squeeze more than 5 people in at a time comfortably. Unless you add an annex which offers plenty of other great features anyway!
I hope you found this article to answer your question about the biggest RTTs, but also which are the best options and why! I learned a lot while writing this article and I hope you did as well.
