Smittybilt Overlander Tent Review: Are they worth buying?

Smittybilt is a reputable brand that has been trusted by consumers for over 50 years. Typically known for their reliable Jeep accessories, they have been innovators in the off road industry for decades. Naturally, to extend their product line in truck and SUV accessories, they jumped into the expanding market of roof top tents (RTT’s).

The current RTT model available in the Smittybilt line is the Overlander Tent. It is considered an entry level tent due to its price point. It’s currently discounted at just $892.99 on Amazon with free shipping, a very fair price.

Quality Materials and Design

To start things off, there are two models of the Overland Tent. The standard sized tent, model 2783, which I will be reviewing in this article. The XL model (2883), shares similar specs, just a larger footprint than the standard Overlander (sleep 3-4 people). The material, design, and features are mostly the same for the two models.

The Overlander Tent is a classic foldable RTT that can sleep 2 adults. The fabric of the tent is heavy-duty rip stop polyester, waterproof, and polyurethane-impregnated. The base of the tent is constructed with 2.5 cm aluminum and polyurethane sandwich base with 300 kg (660 Ibs) loading capacity. The tents frame is supported by aluminum poles with stainless steel hinges.

The tent also has a flysheet addon that is easy to setup with spring steel poles. If you think it might rain during your camping trip you can throw this on in a couple of minutes. The mattress is made of fire retardant foam and is far more comfortable than sleeping on the ground. I would recommend adding a memory foam pad to really make the bed comfortable. You’ll truly be a “glamper” with this addition.

A telescope ladder is equipped on the tent which you can easily change the length by sliding it up and down the tracks. It’s very extra wide and actually quite sturdy. The ladder capacity is about 260 lbs. It can extend a decent length, but they offer an extension component as well if you need it. A drawback to the telescoping ladder is dirt can easily build up in the sliding tracks. Sometimes making it a pain to try and muscle the “sticky” ladder tracks loose. Another drawback to telescope ladders is having to screw the fastener into designated holes. An easy fix for this is by drilling small holes in the ladders tracks for more staggered tightening levels. Below is a picture linked to amazon affiliates to help serve as a visual!

The Overlander Tent can be used year round! From many videos on youtube, consumers say the tent does in fact hold up during winter. You can configure the placement of your tent to your preference, facing the driver or passenger side. You’re probably thinking this isn’t a big deal and it’s not really. But when you’re constantly getting stuff in and out of the car, it can be frustrating walking around to the side you use most.

Unique Features

Inside the tent is a convenient LED strip. This light is extremely bright and will illuminate the whole tent, So bright in fact, some campers prefer to use a smaller light instead. Either way, it’s a cool feature! Inside the tent you will find a 12V cigarette lighter-power adapter and extension cord. This would be great for an electric blanket in colder weather or a small fan during summer.

The Overlander has a sunroof that you can open up which makes for a good star gazing experience. The tent is fitted with mosquito screens and heavy duty zippers. Another fun feature is the shoe bag outside the tent. You might not use it all the time, but it could be handy in muddy terrain.

Helpful Review

Personally, I find myself to be more of a visual learner. This video below helps give a deeper understanding of what you can expect during and after use of the Smittybilt Overlander. This guy has his own channel and is really knowledgeable about the product.

Installation

It comes equipped with a dual aluminum track for universal installation using U-clamps. These are simple to install but you will want to take your time tightening them. U-clamps can slide horizontally and vertically so I would thoroughly test it once installed. Any RTT is going to be a two person job just to get it situated on the roof.

Dimensions

The tent weighs 116.5 lbs (52.8 kgs). The packing size of the tent is 58 x 49 x 13 inches. Once opened, the tent is 95″W x 56″L x 51″H. What’s nice about the foldable tent is they don’t look very large when packed on the roof. Once you unfold it you will be surprised how much room opens up!

The package delivered will weigh around 132 pounds (59.8 kgs). The dimensiones of the box are 60 x 52 x 14 inches. It’s not your everyday package and definitely something you won’t want to ship back.

Warranty

The Overlander Tent is protected by a one year warranty. Other manufacturers offer longer warranties, like Tepui. A very well known and respected tent brand that provides a two year warranty for their RTT’s.

The truth of the matter is you probably won’t even need to use the warranty. I wouldn’t put much stock into this swaying your purchasing decision. The reality is that all of these tents are made from quality materials are made to last. Even so, a year is plenty of time to detect if there are any defective parts on the tent.

Add Ons

Another attractive piece about the Overlander is the ability to add features to your tent. You have the option to equip an annex and or awning!

The Overlander Annex can be found on Amazon for roughly $178. It comes with a travel bag (36 x 6 x 6 in) weighing about 10 pounds when packed inside. Smittybilt offers the annex for both models of the Overlander. Heavy duty zippers allow you to easily attach it to your tent. The interior of the annex is 80″ x 70″ with a removable floor that gives you an array of options. The annex adds extra privacy, a changing room, or even a place to sleep. Additionally, it helps keep out mud and bugs. The versatility of this addon is attractive and not too expensive.

The tents attachments don’t stop there. The Overlander Awning is another useful item you could add to your setup. This will provide you cover from sun or rain. The dimensions are 8.2′ x 6.2′ awning. There is a smaller awning option of 6.5′. This large covered area would be great for relaxing and eating while being protected from the elements. The lightweight aluminum extendable legs make it simple to set up. It includes stakes and ropes for securing legs in harsher conditions. The awning is priced at just over $200.

For many people, your needs change over time. When you first get your tent you might think the annex isn’t necessary. But who knows, one rain storm later and all that mud could make you change your mind. The point is this tent can offer you flexibility, and for a first time RTT owner it’s nice to have that in your back pocket.

History of Smittybilt

Smittybilt was founded in 1956 by Basil Smith. From the company’s humble beginnings in a garage, the sole purpose for “Smitty” was to offer practical and quality accessories for SUVs and trucks. They pointed their focus towards the off road market and have been true innovators in the industry for decades. Best known for their “Nerf bar” side step and tubular front/rear bumpers for Jeeps. For their steel products they often offer lifetime warranties and are seen as a quality manufacturer for their array of products.

Conclusion

Smittybilt has been a trusted brand for over half a century. Smittybilt has a track record for using quality materials, giving the customer the best experience possible, and being innovators in the off road industry. In all honesty, this tent may not be for you and that’s okay! However, after researching multiple Youtube videos, forums, and reviews for hours, I feel strongly about my recommendation.

This tent has more features than its similarly priced competitors. For under $1,000, you will be hard pressed to find another tent with these features and add-ons. I think the Overlander Tent provides an amazing value and will enable you to fully enjoy the outdoors just like any other RTT would. It doesn’t have the fanciest design or most unique appearance, but this tent is a package of convenience and value. Overall, I find this tent extremely attractive due to the price point and many unique features!
