Make Your Rooftop Tent More Comfortable: Tips From An Owner

While using a rooftop tent, the comfort of your bedding can make or break your travel experience. Over time, I’ve been able to find ways to implement bedding options that are more comfortable so others don’t have to experience sleepless nights.

An easy way to make your roof top tent more comfortable is by adding a mattress topper, breathable bed sheets, and an anti-condensation mat.

When buying a new mattress or mattress topper, your choice will likely depend on the style of roof tent top (RTT) you have. In this article, I will walk you through my personal recommendations that will best fit each RTT setup and camper.

Best Option Available – Mattress Topper

Designed specifically to have the comfort of in-home mattresses but with the flexibility needed for life on the road, the Sure2Sleep mattress topper is perfect for a rooftop tent. Available in many different sizes, this mattress topper varies in thickness from two to three inches. This topper is definitely worth the price point for a no-hassle breakdown and high-quality material.

Thinner Mattress Topper

Opting for a mattress topper that is a bit thinner and more affordable may be a better option for some. With RTTs already having the stock mattress in them, a thinner mattress topper may be enough for you depending on your preference.

While shopping around for the perfect topper, base your search on the size of your rooftop tent as well as the thickness you want (nothing more than three inches thick would be my recommendation).

Three inches of mattress padding will make a world of difference. If you have a pop-up tent you can probably leave the padding in the tent as you pack it up. For a foldable tent, however, you may have to take it out of the tent every time so you can fold it all the way closed. This is something to consider if you’re going to add a topper, the thinner it is the more likely it will fit when you close it!

Inflattable Camping Matresses

An inflatable mattress is another option for increasing the comfort of a rooftop tent. There are several brands that provide a plush, cushioned sleep experience coupled with an easy breakdown for packing up. These are nice because they can be used for other activities outside of just your RTT.

One popular option is the Exped megamat. It can sleep multiple people comfortably and is typically used for tent campers.

The Klymit Double V  is offered at a similar price point and is designed to allow one person to move without disturbing the other sleeping partner with its custom ‘V’ patterned technology.

Bedding and Sheet Options

With a new high-quality bed option, the next step to comfort would be to pick out the bedding. To take your RTT’s comfort to the next level ditch the sleeping bag and switch to bed sheets. You’ll be much more comfortable and create a more at-home feel within your traveling living space.

Bamboo sheets are a perfect choice for a breathable and soft sheet. They are made specifically to allow airflow through the material. Adding a thick blanket, duvet, or comforter in addition to the breathable sheets will ensure a great night of sleep.

Another great option are the Tepui bed sheets. This may be preferred by some people as they are specifically designed by a RTT manufacturer and may be more rugged.

Anti-Condensation Mat

It is also smart to throw in an anti-condensation mat to rid your tent of the annoying moisture problem that accompanies many camping trips. The mat works to eliminate condensation within the closed space, creating a fresher environment and better airflow. Opening a single window within the tent while the mosquito net is still up can also enhance the act of eliminating moisture.

This mat will eliminate condensation within the closed space, creating a fresher environment and requiring less time to dry the tent when packing up camp. Opening a single window within the tent while the mosquito net is still up can also aid in stopping condensation.

Other Accessories Elevate Your Roof Top Tent

If you’re wanting to escape the enclosed space of the tent and extend the living space outside, you can certainly do so. The most ideal way to do this is by buying an awning/annex that can be connected to your rooftop or car.

I would add an awning to your vehicle to improve the comfort of your camping expeditions as well. They provide a shaded area to relax on summer days but can also protect you from the elements during harsh weather.

iKamper as well as other rooftop tent manufacturers do make annex attachments for roof top tents that are definitely worth the additional purchase. For example, the Ikamper annex connects to the rooftop tent by zipper and can easily be enclosed to keep heat in during those cold trips. It also creates a funnel to the tent on top of your car that can utilize air conditioning or electric heating units that are placed in the lower level living area.

Understandably, camping isn’t supposed to be just like living at home. But it is ok to add as much as you can to your sleeping area in order to create a comfort level suitable for enjoying the trip. By adding a new mattress, upgrading the bedding materials, and an extended living space you are well on your way to creating the perfect ambiance for whatever your camping needs may be!
