Camping is seen as a relatively cheap hobby and a great means to spend time with the people you love. Since the roof top tent (RTT) industry has exploded in recent years, many wonder what the cost of this fun hobby is.
For a softshell RTT, the average cost will be around $1,500 but starts as low as $900. When looking at hardshell RTTs, $3,000 will put you in the ballpark of that style tent. Generally speaking, RTT costs can range anywhere from $900 to $4,300 depending on the design, materials, and tent manufacturer.
Now, this might seem like a very broad answer to a newcomer looking for a specific answer. So I made a table with over 30 of the most popular RTTs in the market and what their price is. This will help you easily compare various models and sizes while giving you an idea of what is a reasonable price for a RTT!

Now, let’s take a deeper look at these roof tents and what features play a role in their pricing.
1. Smittybilt Overlander
Smittybilt is an automotive accessories manufacturer that has been innovating in the industry for over fifty years.
The Smittybilt Overlander is one of the most popular tents on the market being priced at $899.98 and having the trusted brand name behind it.
What’s great about this RTT?
The obvious benefit this tent brings is its low price point. RTTs are expensive and this tent is the perfect bridge for a newcomer looking to try one out. You are getting a quality product at a very fair price.
Another thing I like about this tent is it can fit 2-3 people which gives you plenty of room. So you can fit two adults and a kid or in my case two adults and a pup! Other RTTs around this price point are strictly for two people.
Smittybilt also has the same model in an XL version that sleeps four people. It is priced at $1,249.99 and is very popular for larger families.
2. Yakima Skyrise
Yakima is known for its high-quality roof racks which are used for cargo carriers, kayaks, and RTTs!
Since their products coincide with RTTs, they decided to make one of their own starting at $1,099.
What’s great about this RTT?
It weighs only 95 pounds which is just about the lightest tent you will be able to find. It fits great for any vehicle type, especially their smaller model. You can buy the Skyrise small (2-person) or medium (3-person).
The tent works well with the Yakima ecosystem. For example, the tent can lock to your rack for added security against theft. I myself own a Yakima roof rack and can see this being very handy.
The tent is a solid base model, but its minimal weight and quality manufacturer are very attractive to many suiters.
3. Tepui Low-Pro 2 & 3
Tepui is a pillar in the RTT industry and have been around for a while.
Coming in at $1,499.95 for the Low-Pro 2 and $1,849.95 for the Low-Pro 3, it is one of their smallest tents and is extremely light and aerodynamic.
What’s great about this RTT?
The Low-Pro is the perfect name for this tent. It is one of the more aerodynamic and slim foldout tents you will find! When closed, it is only 10″ in height making it the thinnest softshell on the market. This is important because your vehicle will have less drag and in turn lose less gas mileage.
If you really want a Tepui branded tent but have a smaller vehicle, this is the one for you! It is their lightest tent in their fleet and will comfortably sleep two people. You can use it in all seasons and it has a reinforced base for extra durability.
I really like all Tepui’s but this model would be great for a couple looking for a light, durable, and streamlined RTT.
4. Tuff Stuff Ranger
Tuff Stuff is known in the overlanding industry for its wide array of products. The Tuff Stuff Ranger is a well-rounded tent with some added features that make it an attractive purchase at $1,378.65.
What’s great about this RTT?
This model is an all-around solid tent, but the most attractive thing about it is the included accessories that you usually have to buy separately. This model differentiates itself with a bundle deal that has an annex, shoe storage bag, and a hanging gear hammock.
The annex alone is worth $200 and is great for extra storage, a changing room, or extra sleeping area. This added space can fit a queen-sized mattress.
Knowing Tuff Stuff has so many other products in the overlanding and camping industry, you know this tent will be compatible with any other purchases down the road.
5. Thule Tepui Explorer Ayer 2
Thule and Tepui teamed up to make a durable and year-round tent. Priced at just $1,199.95 it brings comfort for any environment you take it.
What’s great about this RTT?
It features the same 260-gram ripstop fabric in Tepui’s more expensive models, giving it the ability to be used in all 4-seasons. I love the classic A-frame design which provides plenty of headroom when you’re inside the tent.
The kicker for me is the telescoping ladder that reaches up to 8.5 feet long. These are standard on all Tepui tents, but it is really hard to find this type of ladder for this price. Telescoping ladders are by far the best because they are reliable and easy to use.
I think this tent is priced extremely well and it being a Tepui is even better. You will be plenty comfortable in this RTT.
6. CVT Mount Bachelor
CVT is a high-quality RTT brand that specializes in the foldout style category. This companies sole focus is on RTTs and it shows!
Their tents are premium from top to bottom and are extremely popular. The Mount Bachelor is their entry level tent which fits two people and costs $1,375.
What’s great about this model?
Roof tent users tend to stay brand loyal when they find something they love. This company is no exception. This tent can go on any vehicle and weighs just 98 pounds.
This tent packs a punch with its 280-gram fabric and an insulated aluminum floor. It has a very comfortable 3″ mattress made of high-density foam.
I see CVT’s everywhere! This model is durable from its base up to its fabric. The extra money you pay for this brand is well worth it in my eyes.
7. ARB Series III Simpson
ARB is a well-known titan in the Australian market, where overlanding has been popular for far longer than the United States. Priced at $1,537, this model has been refined over the years and they have thought of everything.
What’s great about this RTT?
You know you’re getting a great tent because this model has been slowly improved over the years. The included annex is always a big selling point that I find attractive too.
This model has a bungee cord system that provides a quick and easy setup. Having a foldout tent myself, I know the process can be a bit tedious. Anything to speed up that process sounds great to me! You can also leave your bedding inside the tent.
All around, the tent has a quality mattress, fabric, and build. As a respected Australian RTT brand, you have to trust they’re doing something right!
8. CVT Mount Rainer
The Mount Rainer sleeps three people comfortably and is priced at $2,195. What’s cool about this model is the option to upgrade to the Summit edition, which bundles a bunch of features for a great price.
What’s great about this RTT?
The base model Pioneer edition is great in its own right with its 280-gram fabric, insulated aluminum floor, and comfy 3″ mattress. But the true kicker is the edition you can upgrade to for just $700 more.
When you upgrade to the Summit edition you get a thicker 360-gram fabric, heavier rainfly, insulated floor, and a telescoping ladder. You also get some extra luxuries like LED lighting, USB ports, softer mattress, and an anti-condensation mat.
The base model is great for seasonal campers that are looking for a RTT to last them years to come. The Summit edition brings a ton of added value for a great price. I think this edition would be better for a very frequent user and someone that is looking to camp in more extreme weather.
9. Eezi-Awn Series 3 (5 sizes)
This South African based company has been in the RTT industry since 1988! Well respected and known in the camping community, the Eezi-Awn Series 3 has a starting cost of $2,150 and can work its way up to $3,375.
What’s great about this RTT?
The coolest thing about this model is the five different sizes you can choose from! The bigger the tent, the higher the tents price jumps up. The specs on the tent are great and being able to pick the exact size you want is very unique.
This is one of the rare RTTs that reaches a five-person capacity. The simplified model is great because each size has the same features and specs. You can use it in all seasons, it’s comfortable and most importantly durable.
I think the specs of the tent are on par with some of the best in its class, but the true difference-maker here is being able to pick the exact size you would like!
10. FSR High Country 80″
I like FSR’s whole lineup of tents because they are unique from the rest of the pack. The High Country 80″ is their biggest model and is priced at $2,895.
What’s great about this RTT?
The design and materials used to make the High Country help it stand out at first glance. It can be set up in a speedy 60 seconds, is rated for all-season use, and has an aerodynamic/sleek design.
FSR also uses a premium tri-layer fabric on the tent which can handle heavy winds, snow, and rain. You also get a beautiful 360° view inside the tent.
The large living space, speedy setup, and unique design of this RTT are all very strong selling points. Not to mention this particular model is available in two sizes.
11. Tepui Autana Ruggedized Series 3 and Series 4
The ruggedized line of Tepui RTTs brings some of the toughest tents to the market. Priced at $2,749.95, this tent will withstand even the harshest of weather. The series 3 sleeps three people, while series 4 can fit one more person and costs $3,049.95.
What’s great about this RTT?
This model comes with an annex which is a nice bonus. On top of that, this sturdy tent has a diamond plate base, 360-gram dual stitched fabric, anti-condensation mat, and heavy-duty hinges.
In short, this tent is built to last! Not only that, but you can feel confident using it at any time of the year no matter the weather forecast.
This beast weighs 195 pounds, but if you have a vehicle that can carry it you will love it.
12. Tepui Kukenam Ruggedized 3 & 4
The Kukenam model differs from the Autana in a few ways, which results in a slightly lower price point. It still has many of the same specs besides the included annex, which puts the series three at $2,299.95 and series 4 at $2,499.95.
What’s great about this RTT?
This tent has the great features you read about in the Autana. It differs because it has the A-frame design which reduces the interior space.
The biggest thing you’re giving up with this model is the extended sleeping area and overhang entrance. The annex can be bought separately, but it won’t enclose your ladder when attached like the Autana model.
These are minor differences overall, but can be big factors for certain buyers. This is yet another high-quality four-season tent offered by Tepui.
13. CVT Mount Denali
This is the biggest tent offered by CVT. It is priced at $2,695 and will accommodate any family adventure. Similar to some of CVT’s other models, this tent can be upgraded to the Summit edition for a total cost of $3,295.
What’s great about this RTT?
The Mount Denali is very unique with its ability to divide the tent into rooms. It comes with a divider, splitting the two twin-sized beds in half. Each “room” then has its own ladder and entrance for added privacy.
I love this feature and could picture it being very handy for friends and families. As I mentioned, you can upgrade to the Summit edition and get all of the added comfort and luxuries that come with it.
If you’re looking for a high-quality four-person tent, I would be hard-pressed to spend my money on another foldout model.
14. X Cover by iKamper
iKamper is another reputable company in the RTT industry. This South Korean based company puts a ton of research and development into their tents and it shows in their quality and creative designs.
What’s great about this RTT?
There are two awesome features that separate this softshell from the rest. The first is the tent doesn’t have a PVC cover. No more wasting time on that dirty cover that goes over your softshell once it’s packed up.
This awesome design also allows for an added rack to be put on top of your RTT. The rack can haul kayaks, skis, or bikes! Many campers like to go do other fun activities when they go camping.
This tent is so different from the other softshells that I would barely put it in that category. iKamper is also known for its extremely comfortable and weather-resistant tents too.
15. Tepui Hybox
Kicking off the first hardtop tent on this list is the Tepui Hybox, which is priced at $2,995. Being Tepui’s only hardshell RTT model, it offers one very unique feature that others don’t.
What’s great about this RTT?
By far the coolest feature about this tent is its ability to convert into a cargo carrier with a simple zip. Many vehicles have cargo carriers anyway and it can be a pain to switch back and forth between the two.
You get all of the Tepui quality but in a pop-up hardshell design. I think this tent is perfect for the right customer that has a use for a cargo carrier as well as a RTT!
It comes with all of the specs and features you would come to expect with a Tepui made tent.
16. Roost USA Explorer
New to the RTT market, this company is making waves with their USA made tents. You can buy this model for $3,348.
What’s great about this RTT?
This is a well-rounded product but my favorite thing about it is the quality parts used to make it. Being made in the USA, they also use heavy-duty components all around the tent to ensure a durable and quality product.
The tent has a quarter-inch fiberglass shell and can be popped open in just 30 seconds! This slim and sturdy tent also has a 5-year warranty which tells me the manufacturer has a lot of confidence in their product.
17. Skycamp 2X
This iKamper made tent features a hardshell and foldable component. This hybrid design maximizes the space inside the tent. If you have an SUV and want a tent for two people, you can’t go wrong with this option which costs $3,199.
What’s great about this RTT?
One of the standout features in this tent is its hybrid design that takes only 60 seconds to setup. There are only a couple of RTTs on the market that have a similar design. It allows for extra sleeping space and storage.
Overall, iKamper’s tents are very impressive with lightweight materials, breathable fabric, and high-density foam mattresses. The shell of this tent has a double-layered fiberglass shell with an inch of air insulation between the layers.
This makes iKamper RTTs one of the best in the market for all-season use. You will be comfortable for many years to come with this model!
18. Roofnest Sparrow and Sparrow XL
Roofnest has made a name for themselves in recent years with their quality hardshell RTTs. They are priced at $2,895 and $3,095 for the XL version, respectively.
You get a ton of value at this price and all of the comfort or upgrades you could want!
What’s great about this RTT?
One downside to RTTs is never being able to walk around inside the tent. You have to crawl around or slouch over when inside. This tent offers a fair amount of headroom at 40″, which lets you comfortably sit up inside the tent.
Another cool thing about the Sparrow model is the built-in storage area and designated solar panel mounting area. Adding solar panels to power RTTs has become much more popular over the years and is a really nice option to have. Any other model with this feature is usually $1,000 or more than this tent!
Roofnest brings an awesome product at a very reasonable price! I think their RTTs are great in terms of value.
19. FSR Odyssey 55″
FSR always has a unique design from the rest of the RTTs. The FSR Odyssey is no different, it costs $3,195 for the 55″ model and $2,695 for their smaller 49″ model.
What’s great about this RTT?
FSR offers an additional cargo rack which can hold up to 250 pounds. Not only is this super strong, but I love the look of it too.
This tent also has an aluminum shell while only weighing 154 pounds on their biggest 55″ model. To top it off, the Odyssey is one of the slimmest tents on the market at just seven inches in height when closed.
There’s so much to love about this tent from the tri-layer fabric, sleek durable design, and speedy setup!
20. Roofnest Falcon and Falcon XL
Another tent from Roofnest is the Falcon and Falcon XL which are priced at $3,395 and $3,495. This hardshell tent is a slim seven inches when closed and looks great on any vehicle.
What’s great about this RTT?
My favorite feature this tent brings to the table is its aluminum shell. Not only does it look good, but it is extremely durable too. You can also add crossbars to carry extra gear along with your RTT.
The flooring has a honeycomb aluminum design which means it is very strong. The clamshell design offers a ton of headroom in the apex of the tent, making it feel more spacious.
If you’re looking for an aluminum shelled tent, this is probably you’re best option if you’re looking to save around $500!
21. Skycamp Mini
I think all of iKamper’s RTTs are great, but this one in particular is one of their more popular models for one specific reason! This tent is well worth it but costs a premium at $3,499.
What’s great about this RTT?
This tent is insanely compact, yet still has a hardshell. iKamper accomplishes this feat with a hybrid design that employs a foldable component. This RTT is meant to fit any vehicle and weighs only 125 pounds! Their manufacturer pictures even display it on a mini cooper.
The setup process is super easy, taking only 60 seconds. You will be well protected from harsh elements and sleep comfortably on the high-density foam mattress.
While there are other tents that can fit smaller vehicles, this is one of the only hardshell models you will come across. Not only that, but the quality and features that come with this RTT are unmatched!
21. James Baroud Grand Raid
The James Baroud brand is a worldwide leader in this industry and makes top of the line RTTs with some unique features that no other brands have. This particular model is its premium RTT with a starting cost of $3,739.95.
What’s great about this RTT?
The biggest stand-alone difference is the electric ventilation system which is powered by a sealed solar panel on top of the tents shell. It has the ability to run 24 hours off of a single charge and it’s waterproof. This helps with cooling the tent and circulating air throughout the tent.
The mattress is high-density foam and is as comfortable as it gets inside a RTT. The fabric is waterproof, solar-reflective, UV-resistant, and breathable. The ladder is specially designed and telescopes for reliable performance.
I could go on forever about the Grand Raid’s features! If you have the money to commit to this awesome RTT, you will be elated with all of its premium features.
22. Skycamp 2.0
The Skycamp 2.0 is iKamper’s flagship model costing a grand total of $3,899! It is huge and one of the more unique RTTs on the market.
What’s great about this RTT?
This is one of the very rare four-person hardshell RTTs! Like the iKamper Mini, it utilizes a foldable component for added sleeping space. If you have you’re heart set on a four-person hardshell, this should be the one you buy.
It has all of the great specs as the other iKamper models like the insulated double-layered shell, high-density foam mattress, telescoping ladder, and insulated floors.
I just love these RTTs because not only do they look and perform great, but they will last you a really long time as well.
23. Alu-Cab Gen 3
Alu-Cab is a South African based company that makes heavy-duty RTTs to hold up to the toughest of weather. Their Gen 3 model starts out at $4,099 but has plenty of upgradable options to be made.
What’s great about this RTT?
I would have to say the biggest feature that differentiates this tent is its electrical capability. The tent has an optional solar panel sold separately, but once it is mounted there are USB and 12V ports inside the tent.
This tent is a tank weighing 195 pounds. It’s extremely comfortable and you can leave bedding inside it, making it super fast to breakdown camp and hit the road!
Alu-Cab is a very well known brand around the world and has been in the RTT industry for over 25 years.
24. Eezi-Awn Stealth
Eezi-Awn is another worldwide leader in the RTT industry. Their Stealth model costs $4,300, is extremely comfortable, and has the durability to keep up with any camper.
What’s great about this RTT?
One of the special features this tent has is the scissor mechanism used to open the RTT. It is like a clamshell, but this design allows for more headroom and space.
The ladder is stored under the tent for a minimal and out of the way design. I love this feature because you won’t have to worry about putting the ladder inside the RTT when you go to pack it up.
This tent also has electrical capabilities and when packed up weighs almost 200 pounds. For the most serious campers, this will probably be the last tent you buy.
Wrapping Up
Roof top tents alone can cost anywhere from $900 to $4,300! Not including a roof rack which can also vary from $400 to $1,200!
There are ways to reduce your entry cost into this hobby if you’re willing to make some sacrifices. You don’t have to buy the biggest and best items your first time around. You can even buy a used RTT for a fraction of the price online at Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, and Craigslist!
On my first RTT I spent a total of $1,350 for my brand new Smittybilt Overlander and Yakima roof rack system. I would recommend saving your money if you’re a newcomer. You always have the option to sell and upgrade down the road with ease!
I found the cost of RTTs to be worth all of the great memories and unlimited freedom it has brought my girlfriend, pup, and I. If you can afford it and enjoy camping, give it a chance. I think you’ll love having one yourself!
