Each camper has a unique set of needs and wants. So naturally, some RTTs will fit a person’s lifestyle better than others!
That is why I decided to make a list of my favorite soft shell roof top tents. As I touch on each softshell RTT, I will go over their features, size, pricing, and much more.
Within my list of favorite soft tops, I gave a lot of consideration to include tents with a wide range of features and durability. This way, I can ensure that at least one of these tents will appeal to you! I have placed these tents in no particular order either.
With all of that said, let’s get right into it!
Softshell RTT models:
Tepui Kukenam Ruggedized 3
Kicking off my list of RTTs is the Tepui Kukenam Ruggedized 3. It is considered to be one of the toughest RTTs on the market. Ideal for 4×4 trailers and tough off-roading.
The base of the tent is lined with a diamond plated base and the tent is wrapped in a 3/4″ heavy-duty internal frame. The fabric is made of 360g dual stitched fabric which is 40% heavier than Tepui’s standard models.
To ensure the tent is secure and can handle even the toughest off-roading experience, Tepui installed heavy-duty 3-bolt hinges and welded aluminum base construction throughout the tent. Even further, this tent has great anchor points and bedding straps so it will stay put while on a bumpy dirt road.
Last but certainly not least, this model in Tepui’s extensive lineup comes with an anti-condensation mat. They can cost you around a couple of hundred bucks and go a long way when camping in the snow or colder weather. I love this bonus feature in the Kukenam Ruggedized model.
If you’re considering a 4-season RTT, this is a fantastic option. Everything about this tent screams durability. This functional RTT can withstand the tough love some campers will give it. Not to mention, Tepui is a highly regarded manufacturer in the industry as well.

Mount Denali by CVT
The Mount Denali RTT brings a very spacious and private experience to your camping excursions. While being able to fit four people, it is essentially two tents in one.
It can be split into bedrooms each having their own door, ladder, and twin XL sized mattress. Extremely convenient for friends or family looking to camp together but in”separate” tents.
A unique feature CVT offers for all of their RTTs is the ability to upgrade each model by “editions”. For example, the base model of the Mount Denali is the Pioneer edition. It is lined with 280-gram poly/cotton ripstop fabric, a lightweight aluminum frame door, a 3″ high-density foam mattress, and an aluminum sliding ladder.
Whereas the Summit edition packs a bigger punch with a 360-gram canvas, heavier rainfly, insulated floor, and adjustable telescoping ladder. A touch of luxury comes with this edition too, with things like LED lighting, USB ports, shoe bags, a softer mattress, waterproof cover, and an anti-condensation mat. All of these added features for just $600 more.
I think the base model is plenty sufficient for casual campers. If you plan on using the RTT during the summer and only a handful of trips throughout, you don’t need to spend the extra money. But it is hard to argue the package deal in the upgraded edition. If you want to extend your camping season and be comfortable while doing it, this is a no-brainer to me!
Cascadia Vehicle Tents (CVT) is a high-quality tent manufacturer that produces a great product and customer service. I have heard first hand how helpful CVT is with their customers. This may not be a deal-breaker for you but it comes in handy if you ever need a repair for your tent.
If this RTT is too big for your needs, they also offer a similar product in smaller sizes on their website. Respectively, each tent is a great option.

Smittybilt Overlander
This is one of the most highly regarded options for campers looking to get into the RTT world, yet trying to maintain a budget.
The Smittybilt Overlander is a cost-effective tent that delivers fantastic value. It doesn’t have some of the fancy features that other RTTs due, but it does not lack quality.
It has a ripstop polyester canvas, aluminum tent poles, telescoping ladder, and a lightweight waterproof cover. These are similar to the specs you would see on the higher-priced RTTs.
The inside of the tent has a LED lighting strip too. There is a sunroof, mosquito netting on the windows, and a waterproof rainfly to boot!
Typically, budget options limit your ability to upgrade the RTT with accessories you may need down the road. But that’s not the case here! Smittybilt offers a massive annex and awning that you can purchase separately. It’s always nice to have these options when the time comes to buy one.
Looking for a bigger tent but this sounds right for you? Smittybilt also has the Overlander XL (model 2883) which fits four people! With the same features as the smaller version, this model adds more room if you want the extra space.
For campers looking to enter the RTT craze, this is one of your best options. You can limit your overall entry cost and not sacrifice any lacking features or your experience using it. Smittybilt has been a trusted Jeep accessory innovator for years. Since entering the RTT market, they have continued to make a name for themselves.

Wanaka 55 ” by Guana Equipment
The Wanaka 55″ by Guana Equipment is a solid option for an RTT. It is fairly priced and has added features that some of the bigger brands showcase.
You can sleep three people in this tent, and one in the annex that comes with the tent. The annex is about 13 pounds and attaches to the tent by a zipper. This extra space is great for storage or sleeping area for larger pups! The doors of the annex can also open up and be used to create three separate awnings, a very unique feature to the Wanaka RTT.
An annex and awning are about a couple of hundred dollars each so there is a ton of value included here with the Wanaka. Additionally, many RTTs can have either an annex or an awning, but not both attached at the same time. The reason for this is because both attachments connect at the same point of the RTT.
Items such as two shoe bags, an anti-condensation mat, and an LED lighting strip come with it. The tent is very lightweight while still featuring a diamond plate aluminum base that will insulate your tent on colder nights.
The Wanaka 55″ RTT is a pick that will give you tons of flexibility along with all of the accessories you would want to add over time. The price point is very generous for all of the accessories and quality that come with the tent.
Need a RTT slightly larger than just 3 people? Guana also has the XL version of this tent with the same features as the standard size. One major difference is the annex size of this tent, which is one of the largest on the market! I have added the details for this tent below as well.

ARB Series III
Roof top tents have been popular in Australia for years as overlanding is part of their culture. This Australian made RTT is built from top of the line high-quality materials. ARB has meticulously designed the tent, making it their best one yet.
The ARB Series III is the predecessor of the II series. After half a year redesigning the tent, they were able to improve the strength, UV protection, increased weight limits, and water resistance capabilities. This series also includes an annex, a must-have for many campers.
Convenience is one of the best things about a RTT. This tent improves on the already speedy design of RTTs by using a bungee cord system to open the tent. These bungee cords keep the walls tucked in to expedite the setup process so you can get to your next destination that much quicker.
While this tent sits a bit on the heavier side of the spectrum, it comes with good reason. When you use this tent you will quickly notice the high-quality materials used, first-class design, and durability that it brings.
For even more confidence in the product, the manufacturer backs the RTT with a two-year warranty.

Tuff Stuff Ranger Overland
The Tuff Stuff Ranger comes in at a great value including a spacious annex and a functional design.
This RTT features an “overhang” near the entrance that covers the ladder. This is handy for protection from inclement weather and wind. When the annex is set up, it provides an enclosed area that can be accessed without leaving your RTT.
This is an original post for rooftentinsider.com, if it shows up on tents101.com, it is stolen content.
The tent can fit two full-sized adults and a child. If you need more sleeping space for friends or family, the annex alone can fit a queen-sized mattress. Folding cots, lawn chairs, and tables are also able to fit in the annex and provide a sheltered area to relax.
Small luxuries such as a shoe bag, under the tent storage hammock, and waterproof rainfly is included.
When you first buy an RTT, it is hard to know if you will go as far as camping in the winter. If you decide down the road that is something you would like to do, then you always have that option.
Tuff Stuff’s anti-condensation mat is sold separately for just over $86. While the included annex provides a bunch of sheltered space, you can also buy an awning for $206.15. Comparing the price points of these exact add-ons to other brands in the market, these are very generous to someone on a budget.
The cherry on top of this RTT is the Tuff Stuff Security Nuts. One sure-fire way to guard against theft is to buy specially made nuts to mount your RTT. These nuts can be used for just about any RTT and are highly regarded in the camping community.

X-Cover by iKamper
Now, this is not your standard softshell because it displays a different design than most. The X-Cover by iKamper eliminates the need for a bulky cover and is quick while doing it!
This tent sleeps 3-4 people, is lightweight, and can be set up in just 3 minutes. Weighing only 120 pounds, it will be very difficult to find a RTT that matches its specs. The X-Cover offers an open sleeping area that gives campers a great view of the night sky, with its double sky view windows.
The truly special features on this RTT are the mounting brackets 2.0 by iKamper, as well as the crossbars on top of the tent. The mounting brackets can be installed faster than any ordinary mounting system. While the crossbars, which have a load rating of 65 pounds, they are great for hauling extra equipment such as bikes, kayaks, or snowboards.
Oftentimes, you have to sacrifice a cargo box or ski rack when you add a RTT to your vehicle. With the X-Cover, it is one of the few options available where this is not the case!
This tent can keep up with the toughest explorers. Add-ons such as a wind deflector, inner tent insulation, mounting bracket locks, and a movie stand can be bought through iKamper’s website. These are just a few of the endless options you can add to your tent.
iKamper has an array of very impressive RTTs. This brand is highly regarded in the camping community and rightfully so. These tents cost a premium but with their unique designs and unlimited accessories, it’s hard to argue.

FSR High Country 80″
The FSR High Country 80″ is one of the larger RTTs on this list, great for families. You can fit 4 adults comfortably, or 2 adults and three children. It is simple to set up as it takes just 60 seconds.
It has a low profile and sleek design which gives your vehicle a smooth ride to your next camping destination. Due to its footprint and size, this RTT is heavier than most. That is why it is rated for full-sized SUVs, mid-size trucks, and full-size trucks.
The inside of the tent boasts great views of the landscape with its oversized doors and windows. One of the cool perks about RTTs is the amazing views while being elevated off the ground, this tent takes full advantage of this attractive experience.
The High Country is protected by a tri-layer technology keeping you warm in those harsh conditions. The insulation is really good on this tent and can stand up to snow and extremely cold nights. You can confidently camp in all 4-seasons with this tent!
The shell is constructed of aluminum poles which are sturdy and can stand up to the strongest wind gusts. During a windy trip, you won’t have to worry about your tent and the fabric not being able to handle it!
Similar to the other RTT brands, you can buy attachment and accessories for the tent at the manufacturers website.

Tepui Explorer Series Ayer 2
This RTT is perfect for a single person or couple wanting to enter the RTT community. You can be confident in the quality of this tent since it is made by Tepui, a pillar in the RTT market.
The Ayer 2 features a spacious A-frame design which gives you great head room within the tent. This gives you the ability to sit up fully and relax in the tent while enjoying the beautiful views nature has to offer.
The 600D rip-stop poly-cotton material protects you from heavy rain and winds. Inside the tent you will also find mosquito netting in all windows/doors and 4 large pockets for storing gear. Weighing less than 100 pounds, little effort is required when taking the tent on and off your vehicle.
This tent is perfect for spontaneous souls with no desire for plans or reservations. Being a 4-season tent, couples looking for a crazy adventure can come and go as they please at any point in the year.

Eezi-Awn Series 3
I like this tent a lot because it is available in five different sizes. Twin, double, queen, king, and two twin sizes are all options. This is really nice if you like the specs of the Eezi-Awn Series 3 but prefer a certain size tent.
The South African based company made a brilliant RTT that can be scaled to fit all family sizes. The tent itself features 4 large doors and windows with mesh netting for added privacy. Each window has a convenient pocket under it for easy to reach storage space.
The mattress is 2.5 inches thick, made of high-density foam, and covered in African-Printed fabric. With plenty of upgrades available such as an awning, sleeping bags, and chairs, the features of this tent are solid but not overly ambitious. It is a high-quality tent but not ideal for winter weather. Which is fine since not all campers require their tent to do so!
Where this tent shines is its ability to scale up to the perfect size for your needs. The strong build and structure of the tent ensure’s a long-lasting lifespan for your future camping endeavors.

Why buy a softshell RTT
Softshell tents have a different set of pros and cons compared to a hardtop. I think a softshell is great if you need a larger sleeping area. Since the footprint can double when you unfold it, this style tent is best for families. I even made an entire article about My Favorite Roof Top Tents For Families, which lists the biggest and best RTTs, similar to this post!
Storing a soft-top RTT can be easier because of its smaller footprint when folded. Since hardtop tents have a fixed footprint that needs to fit multiple people in it, they can be much more difficult to store.
If you need added privacy, this style RTT provides that. Multiple brands offer dual “bedroom” tents that can be split down the middle having their own doors and ladders. For older siblings or couples wanting to bring friends along, this is a nice feature to have.
While this isn’t true in all cases, for the most part soft shells are priced lower than hardtops. This is because of the associated cost for the materials that go into making the hardshell. So if you’re new to roof tents, I would recommend starting with a softshell and then buying a hardtop later on if you find you really love RTT camping.
Soft top tents can handle the colder elements just fine. I would recommend going with a 4-season tent if you’re looking to extend the camping season or camp during winter. An annex can provide you with much-needed space for extra campers or gear. I find that the biggest and best ones offered are made to fit a softshell RTT.
Why you shouldn’t buy a softshell
There are some drawbacks to this style of tent you should be aware too. It is convenient to leave pillows, blankets, and bedding in your RTT so you don’t have to remove it after every use. If you try to close your tent with these items inside, it probably won’t fold up all the way. Whereas a hardshell RTT would be able to do that!
Soft top RTTs handle weather very well and even have thicker fabric options to do so. However, a hardtop provides a better layer of protection from snow and rain. If it rains or snows heavily, you will need to push the buildup of water off your tent so it doesn’t sag.
The hardtop also offers an added layer of insulation instead of fabric. Not only will you stay dry, but also warm in colder temperatures.
The biggest complaint many people have about softshell RTTs is the cover. It gets in the way, consumes a lot of time taking on/off, and weathers over time. Hardtop tents are more durable because of the added protection and tighter seal from the shell. This tighter seal ensures less dirt and debris getting into the tent while stowed on your vehicle.
Not always, but oftentimes soft top tents are slower to setup. Since hardtops only require a slight push upwards and are assisted by gas struts, the setup time can be very fast. This system requires fewer steps when opening your tent. However, soft top tents have made strides over the years finding more creative ways to cut down the set up time, like a bungee system or hybrid design.
Wrap up
The goal of this list of soft shell tents was to showcase high-quality and diverse options for interested buyers. It can be very difficult to nail down a single RTT that is going to fit your lifestyle to a tee.
While a hardtop tent may be the perfect fit for another camper, it may not be right for you. For whatever reasons you have, I hope that you now feel better informed on making a decision and know which features to look for before you spend a couple of grand on a roof top tent!
